The development of an emergency psychiatric service is not an easy process and co-ordination with other psychiatric resources is required. Many more psychiatric patients could have been treated in the general hospital if facilities had been available. The general wards of the hospital assumed greater responsibility for further medical treatment, while committal to the mental hospital declined. ![]() was instituted, such assessments increased from 148 to 340 (during the first four months of each year) the increase in police referrals was outstanding, rising from 16 to 105. Over a two-year period when 24-hour coverage by psychiatric consultants. During the study herein reported, for every three medical consultations in the emergency ward of a large general hospital, two psychiatric consultations were requested. The same extensive range of general hospital facilities should be allocated to emergency psychiatric illness as are available for other medical conditions. ![]() With this background, it will be argued here that re-examination of institutionalisation in the context of the longitudinal course of schizophrenic disorders both confirms the validity of the concept and sets a demanding agenda for alternative care in the community. It would certainly be a major failure if the institutional era with which psychiatry's early professional identity was so intimately bound up were to end in unresolved contradictions. However, the gap that this creates between theory and practice may be risky for the future. As for writing style, the slapstick-everyman first person voice will either be disconcerting or charming to readers.Ĭonsidering the limited information, Silverstein and Me is a possible read for high school students interested in the talented Shel Silverstein, though drug use and sexual content are present. It is ironic, in a field with many other ironies, that a number of studies (Johnstone et al, 1981 Mathai & Gopinath, 1985 Curson et al, 1992) have questioned what Mathai & Gopinath call “the hitherto inviolate (and ingenious) concept of institutionalisation”, at a time when massive deinstitutionalisation is casting into relief some of the practices to which it refers (Team for the Assessment of Psychiatric Services, 1990 Murphy, 1991 Abrahamson, 1993). It is neither a traditional memoir nor a biography, but an odd mix of the two, with embellished and supposed conversations thrown in for effect. Silverstein and Me is a hard book to categorize. The book is more of a stroll down childhood memory lane for Mr. Silverstein’s life by reading his Wikipedia entry. ![]() But, in reality, one can learn about as much of Mr. Silverstein have very few sources to research. Though a tiny final hint offers some drama, there are no big reveals for fans who’ve followed Silverstein’s work, be it a Playboy cartoon or a children’s poem.įor someone who knows little about the reclusive Silverstein (shy middle-class Jewish kid, reclusive popular talent of Playboy cartoons, songwriting, and children’s poems), perhaps Silverstein and Me is a good read. ![]() From there, Silverstein’s life is recalled from their meeting at six years of age to Silverstein’s death. Gold’s Silverstein and Me: A Memoir begins with a dead Shel Silverstein haunting his boyhood pal via song. A man of wildly divergent talents, Silverstein wanted his body of work to do the speaking for him. Shel Silverstein would be happy that this is the case. Students seeking information on the author will find few interviews given and little written about him. Information on the reclusive, but dearly loved, Shel Silverstein is rare.
